Wastewater assessment reveals different approaches across Europe

Evidence from the European Environment Agency supporting the view that wastewater treatment provision should be accompanied by use of the polluter pays approach comes from a study that highlighted different approaches across Europe. The European Environment Agency's pilot study of wastewater treatment looked at the implementation of waste-water policies and measures in the six countries to identify and understand the reasons for successes and failures in implementation. Two of the countries have almost fully implemented the directive, two have yet to do so, and two have only recently acceded to the EU and are therefore allowed more time to fulfil the environmental requirements.
