Human Pharmaceuticals, hormones and fragrances: the micropollutant challenge for urban water management

Thomas Ternes and Adriano Joss, editors of a new book from IWA Publishing on human Pharmaceuticals, hormones and fragrances, outline recent development in this emerging field. Pharmaceuticals, hormones and fragrances are ubiquitously present in treated wastewater, rivers and streams. Several compounds are even contaminating groundwater and drinking water. This means removal options for micropollutants in wastewater and drinking water treatment are needed, as well as appropriate evaluation criteria for biota and humans in conjunction with reliable analytical methods and exposure scenarios.
