Evaluating The Impacts Of Global Change

The European Union (EU)-funded Euro-limpacs project (Integrated Project to Evaluate the Impacts of Global Change on European Freshwater Ecosystems) came to a close in February, completing a programme of work begun in 2004.The project focused on the effects of climate change on freshwater ecosystems, and tried to answer the following questions: what is the effect of climate change (temperature, precipitation, discharge regime, drought) on current ecosystem functioning of streams, lakes and wetlands? How is aquatic biodiversity affected by climate change? What do these changes imply for the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) objectives, the conditions set and measures taken? Freshwater ecosystems are under stress from land use, pollution and climate change. The project seeks to understand the ecological consequences of these interactions with a view to managing them. It is relevant to the WFD, the EU Charter on Sustainable Development and wider international directives and protocols.
