Climate Change Concerns: Comments And Some Solutions

There is indeed a lack of data for assessing the relationship between water and climate change and variability ('The climate change water data deficit', cover story/ p 17-20, February 2009). It is well understood that healthy aquatic ecosystems and safe drinking water are vital to the economic and social well-being of all. At the same time, water is one of the natural resources that may be most at risk to adverse effects of climate change. Because of increasing concerns about water quality for human use and ecosystem sustainability, there is a need to assess the impacts of climate change on the quality, not just quantity, of inland water resources on a global scale as many of these will occur across political boundaries. A series of data collection and dissemination issues must be addressed in order to provide the scientific information required to determine the complex effects of climate change.
