South Asia Faces Water Stress

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has issued a report warning that hundreds of millions of South Asians face growing water stress due to over-exploitation, climate change and inadequate cooperation among countries. These problems are threatening river basins that sustain half of the region's 1.5 billion people, the report says. 'Freshwater under threat: South Asia' was produced with the Asian Institute of Technology. The report is one of the primary outputs of the Vulnerability Assessment of Freshwater Resources to Environmental Change project and presents a situation analysis, investigating the state of freshwater resources in a number of major river basins in the region, identifying the key threats to water resource development and management, and assessing the challenges in coping with them.
