Water Safety Plans In Lao Pdr: Serious About Scaling Up

The small, peaceful town of Pakse, Champasak province, in southern Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR) lies close to the Thai and Cambodian borders. It is famous for being the meeting point of two great rivers - the Mekong and the Se Don. It is therefore apt that the city known for its waterways is now gaining recognition for being the first city in Lao PDR to implement a Water Safety Plan (WSP). Supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and AusAID, the Australian government overseas aid programme, the Laotian government sees the pilot project in Pakse as the first step in an effort to nationally rollout WSPs and improve the quality, management and safety of drinking water throughout the country.
