South Korea's Four Rivers Restoration Project:a new model of water resources management

In 2002 Typhoon Rusa swept through the Korean Peninsula, causing severe damage to the tributary basins of the Nakdong River, the longest waterway in South Korea, killing 246 people and causing $200 million in property damage. The typhoon damaged not only the branches of the river but also the main river channel. A flood alert was sounded in the middle and downstream areas of the Nakdong River, and some parts of the river bank collapsed.
