Inevitability of direct potable reuse

In the first issue of IWA's new regular publication Journal ofWater Reuse and Desalination one of the papers looks at some issues associated with direct potable reuse (DPR) which, it says, will have to become a reality in future. It outlines several reasons for this, one being that the best, most economically advantageous, opportunities in other reuse applications, particularly in irrigated agriculture, are close to being exhausted. Primarily this is because the application areas are generally distant from the source of the wastewater and the treatment plants, meaning large costs for delivery infrastructure and high energy use in pumping.
