The Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) has admitted that the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant released 520 tons (468 tonnes) of water containing an estimated 5000 terabecquerels of highly-radioactive substances. It is the first time that the operator has issued data on the level of radioactive materials in the leak, which it estimates lasted for six days to 6 April. Nearby Fiji's minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation, the Hon Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, is reported to have asked his ministry to explore ways in which the country may be able to donate water to Japan's earthquake-affected areas.
