Greener cities to combat climate extremes

In a wide-ranging review of recent research findings, a scientist from the UK's Coventry University makes a compelling case for the application of sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) for adaptation and mitigation against climate change impacts. Dr Susanne Charlesworth, Reader in Urban Physical Geography and leader of the SUDS Applied Research Group at the university, says it is becoming increasingly recognised that SUDS can offer appreciable benefits in this area, going far beyond the original focus on water quality, quantity and amenity issues.
