Sanitation MDG target unlikely to be achieved

The World Bank and International Monetary Fund have issued their annual report on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), 'Improving the odds of achieving the MDGs: heterogeneity, gaps and challenges', which warns that the sanitation target is very unlikely to be achieved. Sanitation ranks alongside extreme poverty and maternal mortality as the least likely targets to be met. The report notes that 'unfortunately, more than 40% of low-income to upper-middle income countries in the sample... are significantly off-target for access to sanitation'.
