UN system progress on MDGs and post-2015 development agenda

The international community has made progress with initiatives to increase the attention given to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and to establish an agreed development agenda for beyond 2015 - the target date for most of the MDGs. The MDGs are to be the focus of a special meeting to be held on 25 September during the opening meetings of the next annual session of the UN General Assembly. Consultations led by South Africa and Ireland have been underway to draft the outcome document for that meeting. A second draft, discussed at a meeting on 12 July, included a call to target in particular those MDGs that are most off-track, including access to sanitation. It included an urgent call for countries to meet their commitments on Official Development Assistance.
