San Francisco's progress on earthquake resilience for its supply system

With most of the US city of San Francisco's water coming from Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, approximately 167 miles (267km) east of the city, the facilities and infrastructure of San Francisco Public Utilities Commission's (SFPUC) Hetch Hetchy Regional Water System are spread out over hundreds of square miles. Also, the water must be transported across three major earthquake faults, and in 2007 the US Geological Survey estimated there was a more than 60 percent chance of a major earthquake occurring in the San Francisco area in the next 30 years, with studies suggesting one could measure magnitude 7 - capable of widespread, heavy damage.
