IDE recently commissioned an extremely large desalination facility, a 200,000m~3 /day multi-effect distillation (MED) thermal desalination plant associated with the Tianjin power plant in China, 200km north east of Beijing. The plant, undertaken through an EPC (engineer-procure-construct) contract for the State Development and Investment Corporation, is the largest in China. The plant provides high quality drinking water for the local population, as well as industrial boiler make up and process water for the power plant. The desalination system is powered by waste heat generated by the Tianjin SDIC electricity plant, thus reducing costs and minimizing the discharge of heat from the plant to the atmosphere.
