LANXESS launches seawater reverse osmosis membranes

Specialty chemicals company LANXESS has announced the global launch of its Lewabrane seawater reverse osmosis membranes. The membranes add a significant extra dimension to the company's range of water treatment solutions, says the company. Seawater desalination is increasingly being deployed as an alternative water source, in Asia and other areas of the world, as global freshwater resources decline. Previous methods of groundwater extraction, coupled with population increases, have elevated concerns about subsidence in some countries. Approximately 40 percent of Jakarta, for example, is below sea level and Indonesia's expected population growth of around 60 percent over the next 20 years will only increase water consumption needs.
