Maharashtra aims to be drought-proof by 2019

Vidyasagar Rao, the governor of the Indian state of Maharashtra, has pledged to act to make the state drought-proof by 2019. He announced an initiative to enact permanent measures to achieve drought-free status, promote micro-irrigation systems and harvest rainwater. A target of making 5000 villages a year free from water scarcity has been set. The government has also agreed special relief measures for those affected by storms in 2014. A situation of scarcity has been declared in over 23,000 state villages, where crop yield has fallen to below a trigger level for relief measures.
