Southern water's annual turnover is approximately ￡430m ($690m), but as with all UK water utilities, the pricing of its services is controlled by the regulatory body, Ofwat (Office of Water Services). Therefore, in order to maximise profitability, Southern Water must ensure that its costs are controlled effectively. The annual budget of operational expenditure forms the backbone of Southern Water's cost control. This process agrees the planned costs associated with water supply and wastewater treatment. These would typically include costs of materials, power, chemicals and contractor expenses required to maintain all water supply and wastewater treatment assets, as well as overheads including salaries and employee costs for its 2100 staff, transport costs and office expenditure.
