Globally people are turning to the seas for water supplies through desalination - a process that converts saline water to drinking water by removing excess salt and other minerals. Capacity in the desalination industry has been growing at a rate of more than 25 percent for the past five years, according to Global Water Intelligence. In addition, the global capacity of desalination is expected to double in size during the next 20 years, resulting in an installed capacity of more than 10.5 billion gallons per day. The growth is driven by projects in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
