Once in a while, someone steps back to observe the ebb and flow of societies and the irony of choosing a path against their own long-term interest. The curve above is nicknamed "The Seneca Cliff after the Roman philosopher Lucius Seneca (ca. 4 B.C.E. to 65 C.E.), who noted: "It would be some consolation for the feebleness of ourselves and our works if all things should perish as slowly as they come into being; but as it is, increases are of sluggish growth, but the way to ruin is rapid" (Letters to Lucilius, n. 91).
