ENERGY DEMANDS OF THE URBAN WATER LIFE-CYCLE

The General Accounting Office (GAO) provides research reports to Congress on requested topics. The Committee on Science, Space, and Technology in the House of Representatives asked for a report last year on the amount of energy required to supply cities with their drinking water and wastewater treatment and how energy use could be reduced (Energy-Water Nexus: Amount of Energy Needed to Supply, Use, and Treat Water is Location-Specific and Can be Reduced by Certain Technologies and Approaches, April 20, 2011). This article summarizes most of the report's findings.
