Welcome to the 40th anniversary volume of Water Research

Early in 1960, a group of individuals from many different countries was drawn together by their common interest and concern about the scientific and engineering problems of water quality management. These individuals organized the very successful First International Conference on Water Pollution Research held in London in 1962, followed by a similarly successful conference in Tokyo in 1964. Over 750 engineers and scientists from 35 nations were present making it the largest international conference devoted to water and waste problems to that date in Asia. In Tokyo, the initial step was taken to organize a formal International Association on Water Pollution Research. These efforts and the support of the Water Pollution Control Federation resulted in the formation of an International Association at a meeting in Harrogate, England in June 1965. Thus, the International Association of Water Pollution Research (IAWPR) was formed. Subsequently the Association has grown in size and scope (and as a result twice changing its name) until in 1999 it became the International Water Association (IWA).
