EPA Vows To Formalize Federal Drug Research Group If Funds Allow

EPA says it will create a formal interagency workgroup to coordinate research on the risks posed by Pharmaceuticals in wastewater and drinking water in response to a Government Accountability Office (G AO) report that found the agency's oversight of the issue has fallen short of the regulatory bar set in several regulations. But the agency says budget limits may make it difficult to create the group, prompting several House Democrats to call for Congress to fund the effort. "Unless we establish more focused public health research on the potential dangers of Pharmaceuticals in our drinking water supply today, we could be left investigating the outcome of these dangers tomorrow after long-term damage has already occurred," Rep. Brad Miller (D-NC), the ranking Democrat on the House science committee's energy and environment subcomittee, said in Sept. 8 statement releasing the GAO report.
