Utilities Seek Revision Of Drinking Water Consumer Confidence Printing Rule

A group of drinking water utility groups are pushing for the passage of a bill that would revise the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) to rescind the law's requirement that utilities print and mail consumer confidence reports to its customers annually - a move that environmentalists say denies communities their right to know about the safety of their drinking water. The Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies, American Water Works Association, Association of California Water Agencies, National Association of Water Companies and National Rural Water Association (NRWA) sent a letter to Rep. C.W. Bill Young (R-FL) expressing support for H.R. 1340, a bill Young introduced in April that would revise SDWA consumer confidence requirements to allow utilities to publish the annual results of their water quality tests online rather than mailing reports to each of its customers if the utility had no exceedances of EPA's maximum contaminant level (MCL) for any regulated contaminant.
