EPA Proposes Major Overhaul Of Endocrine Screening Program In FY12

President Obama's fiscal year 2012 budget proposal seeks a gradual phaseout of the controversial endocrine disrupter screening program (EDSP) and increasing use of computational toxicology methods — developing toxicology approaches that research office officials indicated last summer are too preliminary for use in the EDSP.EPA's EDSP is a long-delayed program mandated by Congress in the Food Quality Protection Act of 1996. Developing the program and validating the individual assays, or tests, that make up the first tier of the program took years, and it was not until 2009 that the agency released its first test orders for 67 pesticide ingredients to undergo tier one EDSP screening.
