The Navajo Nation is suing EPA, mine owners and environmental contractors for their roles in the 2015 spill of contaminated wastewater from the former Gold King Mine in Colorado that contaminated tribal waterways as well as those in downstream states, seeking damages and a stringent cleanup order against both the agency and private defendants. The tribe filed its complaint Aug. 16 in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico - the same court currently weighing a similar suit by the New Mexico state government over the wastewater spill, although the Navajo complaint targets more defendants than that filed by the Land of Enchantment.
