EPA Proposes Nutrient Criteria Options For Missouri Lakes, Reservoirs

EPA is proposing state-specific Clean Water Act (CWA) nutrient criteria for Missouri's lakes and reservoirs, more than six years after vetoing the state's own rules as inadequate, in order to satisfy a consent decree signed under the Obama administration that commits it to finalizing federal criteria for the waterbodies by late 2018. The agency's proposed nutrient criteria for the Show Me State, posted online Dec. 18 ahead of publication in the Federal Register, include two options for how EPA could regulate chlorophyll-a, nitrogen and phosphorus levels that feed algal blooms and help cause other waterbody harms, such as low dissolved oxygen.
