EPA and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have published, after years of development, their final advice on fish consumption for women who are or may become pregnant, making several changes that appear to address concerns from public health advocates and children's health advisors regarding which fish should be limited or avoided. The new advice, released Jan. 18, encourages women 16-49 years old to eat more fish, setting a first-time floor for fish consumption of eight ounces per week, matching advice in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) first released in 2010. The DGA, published by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), provides the government's dietary recommendations for the general population, while EPA and FDA's advice is specific to women who are or may become pregnant and children.
