Utilities, Manufacturers Fear Broader House 'Buy American' Mandate

Drinking water and wastewater utilities, along with water equipment manufacturers, are urging House leaders to reject efforts to expand "Buy American" mandates to manufactured products, saying the change "would imperil the balancing act we face every day to deliver reliable public health services with scarce resources." Water infrastructure projects that receive funding from EPA's state revolving funds and the Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act loan program are already subject to provisions requiring the use of American iron and steel, reinforced concrete and construction materials. But some lawmakers are seeking to expand those requirements to include manufactured products.
