Undergound Reservoir for the Pumped Storage Powerplant Forbach

As part of the renewal and extension of the Forbach hydropower plant, owned and operated by EnBW, the existing Schwarzenbach plant shall be replaced by a new 50 MW pumped storage plant. The present energy capacity shall be increased by enlarging the lower reservoir in the Murg valley, but an above-ground extension of the existing reservoir or the construction of a new surface reservoir had to be discarded. Therefore an underground reservoir was designed, which is hydraulically connected to the existing reservoir. One main and six auxiliary tunnels can facilitate 200 000 m(3) of additional storage capacity.
