The National Biosolids Partnership Invests in Sustainability

Since the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued 40 CFR 503 in 1993, wastewater treatment plants have been striving to produce biosolids that meet these standards and find use or disposal methods that meet plant needs, are environmentally sound, and are acceptable to the public. When it was adopted, Part 503 was expected to pave the way to "public acceptance nirvana" for land application - in fact, EPA was confident that this rule would, in essence, allow it to declare victory on the beneficial use of biosolids and move on to other regulatory issues. In retrospect, however, Part 503's passage seems to have marked the beginning of the need for continued public acceptance, not the end.
