Scentists have claimed that last year's major earthquake in China's Sichuan province may have been triggered by the 156m high Zipingpu dam, which is sited on a tributary to the Yangtze river.rnThe evidence suggests impounding the dam's reservoir activated a fault line near the site. Large dams can create a phenomenon known as reservoir-induced seismicity, and evidence links tremors with reservoir filling or level changes in over 70 dams.
