Ernest Shackleton was one of the outstanding figures during the heroic age of Antarctic exploration. Born in Ireland, February 15, 1874, Shackleton went to sea when he was sixteen and was certified as a Master Mariner-he could command a British ship anywhere in the world-in 1898.rnShackleton served as a third officer on Captain Robert Scott's Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic, but he was sent home early because of bad health. Living in England, Shackleton worked at a series of jobs, but he was determined to return to the Antarctic. He organized the Nimrod Expedition and in January 1909, Shackleton and three companions reached a point ninety-seven miles from the South Pole. Realizing that his party was in no condition to go any further, Shackleton made a life saving decision to turn back. On his return home, the explorer was knighted by King Edward VII.rnRoald Amundsen reached the South Pole in 1911, but Shackleton saw another challenge. His Imperial Trans-Antarctic expedition would cross the continent from the Weddell Sea to the Ross Sea, via the Pole. In 1914, Endurance left England, arriving in the Weddell Sea in early 1915, but disaster struck when the Endurance became trapped in pack ice and was crushed.
