A suspect in the heist of five world-famous paintings - including works by Matisse, Modigliani and Picasso - told French police that he panicked when his accomplices were arrested and tossed the paintings, valued at $140 million, into a trash can along a road in Paris. The paintings were picked up and compacted in a garbage truck hopper, he told police. Authorities are skeptical of the story but are not ruling it out. The paintings were stolen from a museum in Paris. Alert workers save man A homeless man in Oshkosh, Wis., is lucky to be alive after getting dumped into the back of a garbage truck the morning of Sept. 29. The man admitted he was drinking the night before and fell asleep in a dumpster. When a garbage crew dumped the contents of the container into their truck, the driver heard the man screaming. The man was rescued, and the workers called police. The Salvation Army also got involved, giving the man a warm meal.
