A suspect in the heist of five world-famous paintings - including works by Matisse, Modigliani and Picasso - told French police that he panicked when his accomplices were arrested and tossed the paintings, valued at $140 million, into a trash can along a road in Paris. The paintings were picked up and compacted in a garbage truck hopper, he told police. Authorities are skeptical of the story but are not ruling it out.
