Closed Connecticut landfill to produce solar power

A closed landfill in Hartford, Conn., soon will be producing enough electricity to power about a thousand homes on a sunny day. That's because the Hartford landfill, which first accepted trash and then later ash from an incinerator, will become home to a new solar power project. A six-acre portion of the landfill will have photovoltaic panels mounted on what the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority calls "special artificial turf' as part of its final cap. E.T. & L. Corp. of Stow, Mass., will install the cap and solar panels. The authority expects the project to be producing electricity by Oct. 1.
