Municipal Solid Waste Management in the major cities of Madhya Pradesh, India: Problems, issues and challenges

The State of Madhya Pradesh extends over an area of 308,245 square kilometers accounting for approx. 9.5% of total area (3,287,263 square kilometers) of the country. The population of the State (2001 census) is 60,348,023 with a population density of 196 persons/square kilometers. It is a fast growing State which has undergone considerable change over the last century. The number of towns in the State increased from 97 in 1901 to 368 in 2001. The population explosion, sustained drive for economical progress and development resulted in a remarkable increase in quantity and change in characteristics of municipal solid wastes (MSW) over the last two decades. MSW management has become an important issue requiring scientific management through policy implementation, enforcement of the enactment and strengthening of municipal agencies.
