Attitudes, behavior and willingness of residents towards e-waste recycling: Case study of an Indian University

Given that about a third of the respondents are not well informed or have limited information about e-waste, our study undeniably emphasizes the importance of awareness programs at least at the college and university level, for the success of any future recycling programs. We argue for the appropriateness of deposit-refund financing model for the management of e-waste in India, a policy that will moderate the people's expectation for financial gain from disposing their e-goods. The fear is clearly imminent in respondents who claimed that making a payment for recycling might affect their living style, a reality that could be overtly allayed by institutionalizing interim government subsidies and modest visible recycling fees embedded into the product price. Further, taking a leaf out of the respondents' preference for "best exchange offer", we believe that any future legislation of Extended Producer Responsibility(EPR) through dealer/retailer take back in all likelihood shall be successful.
