Solid waste collection: The case of private collectors in five Ethiopian cities

In the majority of the cities in Ethiopia, waste collection is weak or absent, with consequent environmental and health problems, due also to the fact that dumpsites are located nearby city centres. Through this study, solid waste collection (SWC) operated by private collectors in five Ethiopian cities was investigated. Public and private partnerships (PPP) have become prominent vehicles for investments and provisions of SWC services in several countries (Post and Baud, 2003). The public sector alone, in fact, is unable to bear the costs of new equipment essential to deal with the increasing volumes of urban waste.
