Characterisation and assessment of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in Dhanbad City, India

In Dhanbad city, India, the daily generated waste is estimated to be approximately 440 tons in the Municipal Corporation jurisdiction and the responsible agencies are collecting only the 37% of it (City Development Plan, 2007). The few solid waste disposal sites are mainly open dumps that have neither bottom liners nor leachate collection and treatment systems. A broad characterization and composition of municipal solid waste study is thus essential to decide an effective long-term solid waste management programme in Dhanbad city. The aim of this study was to provide a characterisation of the MSW generated in Dhanbad city, within the 2015-2016 period, for the purpose of selecting the best option to treat and dispose this waste.
