Illegal industry 'robbing us blind'

Illegal operators are robbing licenced operators and tax payers of billions of dollars, says environmental group the Boomerang Alliance. Speaking at the recent Waste Contractors and Recyclers Association (WCRA) annual convention. Boomerang Alliance co-ordinator Dave West said the NGO has been investigating the size and scope of the "illegal" waste material trade nationally. West argued that on best estimates, the "rogue" part of the industry could be handling as much as 5.75 million tonnes per annum of material. This makes it responsible for more than 10% of the total secondary material processing nationally. It also means that potentially billions of dollars in landfill levies, licence fees and investment returns are being lost as these operators "leak" material out of the legitimate industry.
