The Royal Navy's Type 23 Duke-class frigates are the 'work horses' of the front line fleet and while primarily designed for anti-submarine warfare, they have evolved to operate in a general purpose role which today includes standing deployments with NATO formations, maritime counter-terrorism duties and humanitarian support, to name but a few. Today, the Duke Class remains at the forefront of the fleet's operations with HMS Argyll and HMS Montrose currently deployed in the Far East. The first Type 23 warships entered service in the 1990s and delivered a revolution in design and capability which continues to serve the fleet. Now, as the Royal Navy prepares for a new phase in its history with the arrival of the Queen Elizabeth carriers, the Type 23 force will provide escort and, in naval parlance, ride 'shotgun' alongside the new warships.
