James R. Swank (1942-2016)

After several years in declining health, our long-time member James ("Jim") Swank passed away on 30 October 2016. His loss is a big one for our organization, and deprives us of one of the rare real experts who had the kind of "hands on" experience operating and maintaining naval vessels that provides invaluable and irreplaceable insight into understanding naval and warship history. He left many contributions to Warship International, both in terms of numerous published letters in the magazine and contributions to the Information Service, and also in terms to advice and counsel to the editorial staff. Over the years, he recounted a number of interesting experiences in letters and messages to the staff, providing the basis for the remembrance provided here.
