Public Peace, Private Wars: The Psychological Effects of War on Australian Veterans

There are many studies of mortality and morbidity rates resulting from war. More recently, studies of the ways in which families have coped with the loss of husbands, sons, fathers, brothers or friends in war, have appeared. In comparison, the cost of war in terms of the psychological strain it has placed upon service personnel and veterans has received little coverage. Some statistics exist for the prevalence of mental health problems in service personnel and veterans, and there is substantial clinical literature; but there are very few social histories that examine the psychological effects of war on Australian veterans and their families.
