Anzac Day, 25 April, is an annual day of commemoration dear to Australians and New Zealanders. It is the anniversary of the landing on the Gallipoli peninsula by combined Australian and New Zealand units in 1915 as part of the abortive British and Allied attack on Turkey through the Dardanelles Straits. Anzac Day commemorations at Gallipoli take place within Turkish 'Onsekiz Mart Zaferi' or 18 March Victory, a generic term for the rolling national celebration named after the successful Turkish defence against the British and Allied naval attack on the Dardanelles defences on 18 March 1915.1 After the Second World War, Turkish reactions to Anzac Day commemorations were influenced by a changing landscape of current events, which at times promoted attitudes challenging the general goodwill. FurtherMore the increasing age of veterans and emerging pressures related to national identities influenced the nature of commemorations.
