The outsourcing of none-core business functions has been a standard way of life at many Wall Street firms. For years, investment management firms have reduced costs by taking advantage of business process outsourcing (BPO). But lately, BPO seems to be gaining ground in more areas than ever before, as companies reevalu-ate what comprises their core business processes and look for additional ways to save while better serving their customers. One of the main drivers behind the trend toward increased outsourcing has been the heightened amount of competition in the industry. Firms now are realizing that they need to focus more on their core businesses if they want to better compete with their rivals. "More and more, firms are saying, 'We must focus on what we are actually good at doing, where we really add value and differentiate ourselves from the competition, and where we have intellectual property that is unique to us,'" observes Peter Redshaw, research director at Gartner, an information technology research and analysis provider.
