During the final quarter of the last century, major shifts occurred in the way academics and educated people thought about history. Some ground breaking works were produced, and theoretical ideas were adopted from some new cross-disciplinary areas such as studies of popular culture and sociolinguistics. Broadly speaking, a lot of these tendencies represented new approaches to culture, some of them under the influence of dialectical materialism and Marx. One of the key concepts, newly applied, was that of discourse.
