Cognitive Networks for Future Internet: Status and Emerging Challenges

The vision of a wireless world, which will be empowered with cognitive technologies, comes closer to reality as traffic traversing through wireless networks gradually increases and novel techniques on self-management and autonomicity are needed to effectively handle the ever-growing traffic demand, diversity, and heterogeneity. The opportunistic exploitation of the radio environment through an operator-governed opportunistic network (ON) is one of the investigated areas toward the realization of that vision, and these networks are dynamically created temporary, coordinated extensions of the infrastructure. Operator governance is being realized through the use of cognitive systems that acquire the context, policies, and profiles of the environment and make decisions on the creation of ONs. Moreover, an operator- governed, end-to-end, autonomic, joint network, and service management calls for the definition of a unified management framework (UMF) of networks and services that will quest for seamless unification of the control and management planes by introducing self-organization and cognition. The challenges ahead also call for an effective management of a sheer number of objects and devices of the Internet of Things (IoT) domain, which will be realized through the introduction of a cognitive management framework for IoT. Consequently, the knowledge gained from the research community about the cognitive management ecosystem shall constitute an efficient approach for addressing the technological heterogeneity and for obtaining context awareness, reliability, and energy efficiency.
