Point -of -slaes(POS) systems: Sexy, they're not. And granted, they don't elicit the kind of excitement generated by Web services, wireless and other emerging technologies. But it's difficult to imagine a technology that is better suited to the solution-selling blueprint of the small and midsize business (SMB) VAR. ScanSource, an IT distributor based in Greenville, S.C., has recognized the value of POS systems, as unglamorous as they may be, and made the technology a cornerstone of its successful business. In fact, the distributor's POS business has helped ScanSource's revenue surge 6 percent to $276.5 million for the company's first fiscal quarter ended Sept. 30, 2003. Mike Baur, president and CEO of Scan-Source, says the quarter saw strong growth for the company's POS business.
