On July 18, after six months of waiting, the U.S. Departmentrnof Commerce (DOC) has finally pulled the trigger byrnlaunching a Section 232 investigation into whether uraniumrnimports into the U.S. threaten to impair national security. Therndevelopment comes as no surprise to those following therntopic. Truly, it was not a matter of whether the investigationrnwould happen, but rather when. After all, one of the primaryrnreasons for the six months delay was due to the DOC’s Bureaurnof Industry and Security (BIS) being overwhelmed byrnthe recently imposed steel and aluminum 232 tariffs and newrnSection 232 investigation into automobile imports. BIS’srnworkload has only increased over the last half a year, and itrnnow has added pressure to make a move on the uranium petition.
