UK NNL and JAEA add HTGR technology to existing agreement

On October 16, the UK National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) announced that it expanded the scope of an existing cooperation agreement with the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). The two organizations have agreed to work together on high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) technology.An energy policy report that the Nuclear Innovation and Research Advisory Board released in June 2020 stressed the strong potential of HTGR technology to help the UK to attain its future energy goals. In July, the UK Department of Business,Energy, and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), chose the HTGR designer and Urenco subsidiary U-Battery as one of three companies to move from feasibility to the development phase for the Advanced Modular Reactor program.
