By the time the typical American teenager turns 18, he or she has seen 40,000 dramatized murders and 200,000 other dramatized acts of violence. Not that Hollywood has been counting. But it may be forced to start, now that President Clinton has initiated a $1 million federal probe into whether the movie, music, and video-game industries deliberately market violence to kids. The entertainment industry had expected the squeeze but nevertheless labeled the 18- month Federal Trade Commission and Justice Department study a "witch hunt." At the same time, studio chiefs and videogame manufacturers were quick to profess they have nothing to hide. "Let them look," said David Geffen, head of DreamWorks Records.
